Do I Need to Clean My Roof?

One of the biggest questions we get asked is “Do I need to clean my roof?” Of course our answer is yes because we are roof cleaning specialists but also because we know of no good reason to allow mosses, fungus and lichen to grow up there.

Moss Covered Roof Kent

Harmful moss on roof

Allowing your roof to become infested, has no;

  • Aesthetic benefits
  • Tile benefits
  • Health benefits
  • Property Value benefits

When allowed to grow, mosses often harm different types of roof tiles in different ways.

  1. Concrete roof tiles look washed out due to organic acid secretion
  2. Fibre cement roof tiles suffer from early membrane coating damage
  3. Kent peg tiles end up crumbling due to mosses breaking down their structure
  4. Slate tiles suffer from Pyrite rusting (common in T2 type slate, not in T1)

Crumbling Roof Tiles Underneath Moss

Would you buy your new home if the roof was covered in moss? I know I wouldn’t because, without a RICS surveyor’s report, who knows what damage could be caused to the roof tiles and are the timbers rotting underneath? Increasing numbers of surveyors reports recommend roof moss removal.

When buying a home with a moss infested roof, you can use this as a bargaining tool to reduce the asking price significantly.

Thinking of selling your home? Cleaning your roof will have benefits of helping you sell your home for more money, faster!

Sick Building Syndrome

Could organic matter spores from your roof be blowing inside your home through the windows?

Do your children suffer from sore throats, coughs and runny noses more often than they should?

You wouldn’t allow mould to grow inside their bedrooms, because you know it can affect their health. Yet just a few feet away, many of us allow all types of organic matter, moss, mould, fungus, lichens etc. to grow freely.

Older homes can almost get that new home feeling when you take care of the outside. When completed, roof and other exterior cleaning projects will return the pride you once had for your home.

  • Instant smile factor!
  • Neighbour envy!

You have to ask yourself: “Do I need to clean my roof and what are the benefits if I leave it?”
