How Can I Cool My Flat Roof?

With more extreme heat alerts on the news these days, people are asking how can I cool my flat roof.

Science has taught us that darker colours absorb heat, whilst lighter colours such as white, reflect heat.

Flat roofs on commercial buildings are often completely covered with dark coloured moulds and algae’s.

Because dark coloured flat roofs absorb more heat, buildings become naturally much hotter inside.

Air conditioning which keeps your workspace cooler are working harder and using more electricity.

Simply removing the dark organic matter will reveal a lighter coloured roof underneath.

Air conditioning will use less electric energy to keep insides cool once the roof is lighter in colour.

The answer to how can I cool my flat roof is to clean it regularly by using the safe soft washing method.

Soft Washing is the safer alternative to pressure washing. It used one third of the water a pressure washer does. Because little pressure is used when cleaning flat roofs, there is no risk of damage to the membrane.

Pressure washing a flat membrane  roof can cause spores to enter the building through the air conditioning systems.

Which is not good.

Soft Washing prevents these spores from entering the HVAC system.

This helps prevent sick building syndrome.

Types of flat roofs which can be soft washed safely.

  1. EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)
  2. Sarnafil (Sika)
  3. Rubber
  4. Concrete
  5. Tiled
  6. Paving Slabs

Other benefits of removing dark organic matter from your flat membrane roof.

  • Non Slip Hazards
  • Increased Life Span of the Roof
